Who are you?
I think the most important thing is that I'm a mom, so I'm a proud mom to two kids, but I'm also a gut health scientist, dietitian and nutritionist, which gives me so much passion, being able to discover every day, all of the new and exciting things that's happening within our body, and that has to do with those trillions of gut bacteria we call our gut microbiome. Very scientific word.
What is your background?
So I first started my career in nutrition and dietetics around 15 or so years ago, and I was working in the hospital setting with all different types of conditions, whether they had kidney disease, heart disease, different types of cancers. But I was also really fortunate to be the nutritionist for the Australian Olympic Cry swimming team. And it was these two very different populations both coming to me complaining of the gut that going, what is going on here? So that's when I decided to embark on a PhD, looking at whether we target the gut through the right nutrition, whether that could help with not just gut symptoms that so many people struggle with, but systemically throughout the body, could I improve heart function, kidney function? It was really that PhD that solidified to me that I wanted to dedicate the rest of my career to gut health.
What is gut health?
Gut health is essentially this nine metre long tube that delivers food from entry all the way. So yes, we all have this nine metre long tube coiled up within us, and that is what gut health is.
