Who are you?
Hello, my name is Neil Greenberg. I'm a psychiatrist and a scientist working both at King's College London and with March on Stress Limited, which is a psychological health consultancy. I live on the south coast of the UK and I enjoy being outdoors often with my family. And I have a particular soft spot for the family Guinea pig, who's called Cookie. She likes me too, I think, especially when I feed her spinach.
Can you tell us about your background and experience in trauma and mental health?
I served in the Royal Navy for 23 years as a doctor and a psychiatrist, and that's where I developed a strong interest in psychological trauma and its impacts upon people, communities, teams, colleagues, and indeed nations. Hopefully, I can share a bit of my knowledge with you in a way that you will find helpful.
What led you to specialise in trauma-related care?
Whilst I was in the military, along with great colleagues, I deployed to a number of highly challenging environments, including on combat operations in the Middle East, on a warship which circumnavigated the globe and in a nuclear submarine, which stayed underwater for months at a time. As well as being exposed to trauma myself, my role as a doctor and then as a psychiatrist led me to help many people whose mental health had been negatively affected by trauma. I carried this interest into my work as an academic boast while still serving in the military. And since I've left,
